I have been playing piano since 1994, and writing music since 1995. My first CD was published in 2007. I also have an Associate of Science degree in music. I primarily write by ear. I’ve had one year of piano lessons, twice.
So much for credentials…
Then again, I don’t think music is judged by the credentials of its composer. Usually if it sounds good, it’s judged favorably. If it doesn’t sound good, no one listens to it. If that can be considered music theory, so be it.
